A vulture, marabou, bison, baboon, numerous dogs and cats, as well as figurines representing human figures will be on display starting in October at the National Museum in Wrocław. This is another exhibition in a series dedicated to post-war Polish design. In total, nearly 340 porcelain figurines designed by the most prominent Polish designers will be showcased. The exhibited objects come from the private collection of Tomasz Dziewicki, supplemented by items from the collections of the National Museum in Warsaw and the National Museum in Wrocław. This exhibition is dedicated to one of the most fascinating design phenomena of the late 1950s and early 1960s in Poland. It emerged thanks to a program implemented by the Institute of Industrial Design in Warsaw, one of whose tasks was to prepare new designs for state porcelain factories. The institute's designers were guided by the idea of reforming Polish home interiors in a modern spirit and eliminating what was referred to as "bourgeois kitsch." The titular "Great Four" refers to the sculptor-artists working in the Ceramics and Glass Department of the Institute, hired in 1956 to create new designs for small-scale sculpture to support production in state porcelain factories. The team was organized by Henryk Jędrasiak, a graduate of the sculpture department at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, and he was joined by Lubomir Tomaszewski, Hanna Orthwein, and Mieczysław Naruszewicz. They were tasked with developing a new collection of porcelain figurines that would meet contemporary aesthetic expectations—objects that would be small works of art accessible to every consumer. In a few short years (1956–1965), the artists created numerous designs that went into production in all Polish porcelain factories, from Ćmielów to Wałbrzych. The trend sparked by the IWP designers caused the directors of individual factories to expect the artists employed in their design centers to prepare their own patterns. In addition to the works of the "Great Four," the exhibition will also feature figurines designed by Henryk Baran, Paweł Karasek, Stanisław Olszamowski, Eryka Trzewik-Drost, and Zbigniewa Śliwowska-Wawrzyniak. The presented collection of Tomasz Dziewicki will be complemented by objects from museum collections. Dziewicki began his collecting journey as an amateur with little knowledge of Polish porcelain, becoming interested in small-scale sculpture out of sentiment. The first figurine he spotted at a Sunday flea market appealed to him not only as a porcelain trinket with an interesting shape but also because it reminded him of a similar object that adorned a shelf in his family home. Today, his collection of over 350 pieces is a representative set documenting the majority of sculptures created during that period. Source: Press release from the National Museum in Wroclaw
